counta function

I'm trying to use the counta function to count non-blank
cells in a row. However, I would like to differentiate
between two possible values (F and V) can I use counta to
just count the F's in a given row?

Assuming the values are in row1,

Try in say:
A2: =COUNTIF(1:1,"F")
A3: =COUNTIF(1:1,"V")
