Corrupted WiFi drivers...

I think I may have gotten a virus that corrupted the wifi drivers because my
Microsoft Wireless Adapter MN-720 no longer works. Instead of the blinking
lights...now both lights are dim and constant. I checked device manager and
I no longer have a wireless icon. At the bottom there's an exclamation point
next to the MN-720 driver and MacPhyter PCI adapter-Packet Scheduler Miniport.
I tried getting a USB WiFi antenna and the same exclamations came up. I
can't figure out how to fix the drivers, being that I've erased and reloaded
them several times with no luck. Is there a way to repair or wipe them away
and reboot them?

A number of other drivers were blown out too from the virus, but I have no
need for them. And I don't think I have the virus anymore, unless that's
what's causing this problem.

I have spent hours on trying to fix this problem and I've had no luck. I am
also not too familiar with computers, so that doesn't help either.

Any help would be much appreciated...

thanks,
sonny

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Report in the System log
over the last 2 days and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.

(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

This happened a couple of months ago...I have hundreds of error reports. I
have no idea which one caused this problem or any of the other problems I
have running on my computer.

If you know any information on how to fix the problem...I am all ears.

thanks,
sonny

I have hundreds of error reports since this happened a couple of months ago.
I have no idea which ones caused this, and all the other problems on my
computer. If you have any advice on how to get the drivers working again, I
would greatly appreciate it.
thank you,
sonny

Yes I've seen this happen with every kind of connection like Dialup Modem,
Wired Ethernet and WiFi as well. Sometimes a virus or a trojan gets in and
it'll make the Windows WinSock (which is what makes internet in windows work)
corrupted. Most likely nothing is wrong with your original WiFi device,
antenna or drivers. But when the WinSock gets corrupted you may need to do a
Windows Repair. Similar to when you boot the computer with your Win 2000 or
XP CD and do a fresh install. But stead of installing, do a repair. This will
go through and restore precious system files and services such as WinSock, to
that windows original state. As far as your programs already installed it
won't mess with those. And once in a while AOL will no longer work correctly
after a repair so have to reinstall that program. But for the most part this
should do it. But you'll need to get rid of the virus first. Or it will just
happen again soon down the road even after the repair. So get Nortons or AVG
and scan for virus. Try AVG first and see if works out for you, cause AVG is
very good and is totally free. Just go here www.grisoft.com and then click on
Programs under where it says Downloads, and then click the first link AVG 7.1
for Windows. It's free, not a trial. Here is a Microsoft Tip on how to do a
Windows XP Repair Install.

What Warning / Error Reports appear in the System and Application logs
during the 2 minutes before and after the report you posted.

What version of Windows XP is installed?

Which version, if any, of Windows Server is installed?
