can anyone explain why backing up windows apps to a linux partition no
longer work when attempting to reinstall those apps on the original PC and
OS?

Hi,

How did you back them up and how are you trying to restore them? And why?

I sent them over my local network to my Linux server. Programs such as
adaware, etc. I just reinstalled an OS on my laptop and when I retrieved
the files via ftp, none of them worked. I got error messages that stated
that the files are not valid Win32 files.

Hi,

Did you simply copy the program files, then copy them back after the clean
installation?

If so, then that is the problem. The program(s) must be INSTALLED under the
operating system. Only installing creates necessary registry entries and
adds needed files to the system folders. When you did a clean install, you
wiped those out.

You can save data files the way you did, but not programs. They must be
reinstalled from the original installation media.

I screwed up . I did a binary transfer to the server and then tried to get
them in ascii mode. Setting the ftp transfer to binary mode fixed the
problem. It's been awhile since doing this from the command line.......

Hi,

Well that would definitely screw up a lot of things. I take it you did a
repair installation, not a clean installation.

You have to do a "clean" install or you'll just be dragging your old
problems with you.
