I would very much appreciate an explanation for the function of the file
"system32\drivers\ntfs.sys". This file was reported by my system as being
missing or corrupted with the suggestion to repair it using the Windows
sep-up disk. Whilst I did not succeed in doing this, the problem seems to
have sorted itself out when I "tidied up" a drive containing data, but not
the O/S. I used another computer to do this. It would however be good to
know for future reference what really happened and why. I am intrigued.

ntfs.sys is the NT File System Driver. The driver file that allows the
system to read and write to NTFS drives.

If ntfs.sys is messed up, you're pretty much screwed.
