I am trying to upgrade from ME to XP Pro. I have Dell
L866r PC with a 20 gig HD that has 16 gigs free. I have
did a scan drive and defrag 2 times, each before the
install phase. (no error) I have did a clean boot into
ME, only application runnning, were sytray and explorer.
The install get to the point where it reboots for the
frist time. At that point, it comes up with this
error. [setup has determined that the C drive is
corrupt and cannot be repaired] Any help would be
appercited. Tom

Try booting from the CD into recovery console and running a chkdsk on the
volume if you can. Sounds like you may have a corrupt file system which
chkdsk might be able to help with. Worse case, parallel install into a new
directory to make sure the hardware is ok, then backup your data.

Assuming you have the XP Upgarde CD, and an Me CD, I'd skip the Upgrade
operation entirely. First boot into the XP CD, and run a Windows XP
Compatibility Check. If any issues show up, address these before running
Setup. Then, assuming everything else is fine, go into Repair Console, and
delete the primary partition. I assume you have previously backed up all the
data files, address book(s), configuration files and e-mail archoives you
wish to keep to removable media like writable CDs. You will need this, as
deleting the primary partition destroys all old data beyond any repair.
Once you have deleted the primary partition, run Windows XP Setup from
the XP CD. Early in the process, you will need to swap in and out the old Me
CD, from which Setup will read files and verify that you own a qualifying
product. After this, the Setup process will proceed normally, and you will
have a clean install of Windows XP. Run all the critical and suggested
updates first, before installing your applications, and then run a Defrag.
Reboot, set a Restore Point, and begin re-installing your applications, one
by one, with a reboot and a new Restore Point between each one. It takes
more time, but it is well worth it.
