Corrupted Access 97 Database

Symptoms:
This database will not be repaired or compacted.
1. Access Hanges when you try to open the database (which
has a switchboard that opens up.)
2. Sometimes you see the "Not Responding" message and
sometimes not, but when you close you are given the
message: " Do you want to send message"
3. At this point every time you respond "don't send" it
doesn't end the task.
4. Upon opening Task Manager, you find that there are
several copies of Access not responding and not easy to
end as tasks.
Has anyone had this problem?
