The Win32 folder on my Win XP Pro was corrupted by a
virus. After allowing NAV to repair the corrupt file, my
CD ROM stopped working properly and I get numerous Win32
error messages. What can I do to repair the OS?

Try to run (Start -- Run...) msconfig, press "Launch System Restore"
button on General tab, and restore your computer to the date close
before you've got a virus.

None of your documents (including graphical files, movies etc.) will be
lost -- but not the programs you installed or saved to the drive after
the date/time of the restore point you used.

If the things go worse after that, what is unlikely, -- you can undo
this rollback (in Safe Mode if need) so the system will be restored to
the current state.

No, of course you don't want to use System Restore. First of all, you
normally disable System Restore before virus repair because the virus
files will be *in* System Restore. If you didn't disable it, then you
don't want to run a restore and get the virus back! The OP should do a
Repair Install instead, if s/he is really sure the machine is clean.

Malke,

Though I said in the first lines:
- I think, you are correct with the Repair Install. There has to be less
problems with it than with System Restore -- even if System Restore
hadn't been disabled.
