corrupt or missing system32 file

I get the error message "Windows could start because the folllowing file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system . It instructs me to insert the CD and press 'r' for repair. I tried booting from my original setup cd but I get another error message about a line error. I've even tried a friends cd to eliminate the chance that the CD was the problem. Basically, I can't get to the recovery console option. When I checked the KB article 307545 the warning is not to go through the procedure with an oem op system, which of course I have. What do I do? Recover the corrupted registry and run the risk I can't restore the original hives
 
If you own a microsoft xp cd,you install cd,reboot,boot to cd,recovery
press enter key for password,that gets you recovery options,typing:HEL
displays all. If you dont own a xp cd,contact mfg of the cds you own or ch
thier web site for info.
