can't download microsoft updates, get message"current
security settings prohibit running Active X controls on
this page" have changed security settings and have taken
computer to professional and they say must wipe hard
drive clean and reload XP to remove corrupt file. Any
suggestions before I resort to doing that. Novice at
this and a 6 month old Dell.

Try the following:

1) Open Internet Explorer
2) Select Tools > Internet Options
3) Select Security Tab
4) Highlight "Internet" and Click "Custom Level"
5) Under "ActiveX controls and Plugins" Verify the
following:

Download signed ActiveX controls = Prompt
Download unsigned ActiveX controls = Disabled
Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe
= Disabled
Run ActiveX controls and Plugins = Enabled
Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting =
Enabled

6) Under "Scripting" Verify the following:
Active Scripting = Enabled

7) Next, click on the Advanced tab. Scroll down the list
and make sure there
are check marks in the boxes next to:
a. Use HTTP 1.1
b. Use SSL 2.0
c. Use SSL 3.0

8) Close all open browsers, then connect to the Windows
Update site and see
if it works.

Start > Run
Type "regsvr32 softpub.dll" (without quotes)
Press ok.
Should receive a succeeded message.

Repeat above steps for:
wintrust.dll
initpki.dll

This can also happened if an installed program is
intercepting the Windows
Update process.
Here's a knowledge base article with a list of some known
programs:

us;241234
For testing purposes you may try temporarily disabling
any web
enhancement/accelerator/Antivirus programs before
accessing the site.
