corrupt file empty directory

i have an external hard drive with music files on it, windows will not let me
defrag because a particular file is corrupted, i went to the file to
delete and get error message that the directory for that file is empty, so
what to do any help greatly appreciated johnnymac

Back up the data and then do a Chkdsk on the external drive. After the
data is backed up, go to My Computer and right-click on the icon for
the external drive. Under tools, use Chkdsk.
