Corrupt Excel file as attachment

Using Outlook 2003 attaching an Excel spreadsheet as an attachment the people I send it to either receive no attachment, or it comes through as a winmail.dat file which is unreadable. Sending email through an ISP (not an internal server) and using an HTML format for the email body. The body of the email comes thru fine...just the attachment that's an issue.
