Hi Ant,

It sounds like your database got overwritten by Excel. Try opening the
"database" with Excel. If you open it successfully you know what you've
got.

One way or another it sounds like time to revert to the most recent backup.

HTH

I have an Access 2003 database where a user tried to export a report to it
in Excel format from a second party application. What they shout have done
is export to excel and Access as a link to that workbook, however what they
actually did was run the report and tried to save it ti the Access
application. Anyway the Access application will no longer open, giving an
error message of unrecognised database format. I have tried to open a new
database and import all the objects buy as soon as I point at the original
application I get unrecognised database format. I have also tried to open
the application on a earlier Access 97 machine because I know that this is
similar to the error message you get if you try to open a 2000 database on a
97 machine but still no joy. If I try to do a repair database I again get
the same error message.

Can anyone suggest how I can fix or open this application? Thanks in
anticipation.

Thanks for that Larry, however I can't open with Excel there are many
tables, query's and forms in the database. Luckily it gets backed up daily
however it was corrupted towards the end of day and I was trying to prevent
re inputting a days worth of data.

Yes, those objects should be present but if the Access file were
over-written by an Excel file they wouldn't be. I suggested it only as a
troubleshooting step.

I'd guess your database has been toasted.
