Why is it that when I copy files to a cdwr they become read only files, which
results in not being able to delete them from the disc. Am I doing something
wrong or is this the norm. ???

This will only work if you have formatted the CDRW for packet writing.
The native XP CD burning function will not do this. You need a
third-party app such as Nero, or the excellent CDBurnerXP Pro, which is
free.

What program/software are you using to copy to a CD-RW? If it's the in
built software in XP that does not treat the CD-RW as a big floppy disk, it
treats it as a CD-R. To use a CD-RW disk as a big floppy disk 3rd party
packet writing software is needed such as Sonic or Nero. See this link for
info on burning CD's in XP.

If you are using only XP to do this, then this is the normal behaviour.
CD-RWs are only treated as CD-Rs by XP.

If you want to write/re-write/delete file on CD-RWs at any time, look for
software like InCD or Roxio's Drag to Disk.
