I've installed old drive as a slave in a new machine and was advised how to
take ownership of files I was unable to copy because of read-only access
denies problems. So, I've copied all Word Excel files etc.
Now I need to copy a couple of programs for which I do not have original
disks - they are simple scanner utilites I picked up from a magazine but I
used them frequently. I have copied the programs which just sit in Program
Files and I can't get them to install or run.
Is there any hope for me here? Or is it not possible to do this?.

Thanks

You could be SoL.
What are the names of the programs? Have you Googled for them?

Most programs can't just be copied and expect them to run as you used to be
able to do in DOS days. Programs tie into the OS, registry, ini files, etc.
Search on the web (Google) for the program names and see if they may still
be available for download or you may need to go for other programs.

Thanks for taking the time on this: thanks also to Larry and Shenan.

I'll take your advice and google: the programs are Textbridge and Photosuite.

Thanks again

Bob,

Thanks for this. I've had a really bad illness over last 2 years - that's
the reason for new machine: a gift from the kids: welcome back, Dad, need an
increase in my pocket money!!

Anyway, everything I had is somewhere but I don't know where: maybe I'll
find a shareware or something but I really used the programs quite a lot -
scanning to fax saves walking: walking is off the menu!

Thanks again.

Text bridge is an Optical Character Recognition program (haven't seen it in
about 7 years) and there may be freeware or shareware available to replace
it which may work better with XP than an old version.

The new version of TextBridge is available for download here for $79.99
http://www.nuance.com/textbridge/ or you can order it from Amazon here
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000067VPA/104-9543060-7292736?v=glance&n=229534

While I haven't tried it you may try this program instead of Textbridge. If
it works for you, it is free http://www.simpleocr.com/
Other program sources are available.

The new version of PhotoSuite (8) is available for $29.99 via download here
