Copying cell contents

in the cell in sheeet 2 type
=sheet1!A5

note exclamation mark <!> which is the key above tab

I am using Excel 2000. I need to copy a name that is located on Sheet 1
cell A5 to a certain cell on Sheet 2. I was hoping to put a formula in my
Sheet 2 cell that would automatically place the name there for me, but so
far I haven't been able to get anything to work.

I don't want to use a macro for this. Can anyone please help?

When I try that it doesn't work.

I put: =sheet1!A5 into my cell on sheet 2 and now the cell just says
=sheet1!A5. I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

Can you try to help me once again?

Sheet 1 Cell A5 contains a person's name that I typed in. Just plain text.
(if that makes a difference)

I kept trying it, and I finally got it to work. I think I had some cells
merged and that was the problem.

one problem may be that the cell in sheet2 may ba already
formatted(perhaps as text). highlight that cell and click exit-clear-all
(DO NOT merely hit delete key) then type
=sheet1!a5
see whether you succeed and let the group know
