I guess I should have explained a bit further. The desk top that I have came
with XP on it. Just before I purchased this machine, I ordered XP from
Amazon. It has never been used. The laptop that I inherited has no operating
system installed. I wanted to install the most up to date Windows on it
before I donate it to a local abuse shelter. The women and their children can
then keep in touch with family and friends without anyone knowing where they
are physically. Also, they can use it to search for jobs, living spaces and
other resources. If 95 or 98 can be obtained on floppy, anyone have an idea
where I could find one?

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far.

If your question is about Win95 or Win98 then you should post
it in a Win9x newsgroup.

All Windows operating systems from Win95 up require a few
a CD to install, far exceeding the capacity of a floppy disk.
You're probably thinking of DOS6.2 - it came on a few floppies.

I did not understand your problem the first time you posted. Not sure I
understand after you explained a bit further.
Is the Windows XP you purchased from Amazon a upgrade or a non-upgrade
version. If your purchase is an upgrade, then you will need the qualifying
product which is Windows 97 or later. If your purchase is a non-upgrade
version or you have the qualifying product CD, select in the old computer
BIOS to boot from CD and insert your Windows XP CD in the drive, boot and
install. If your need a qualifying product, insert the CD for the qualifying
version of Windows in the drive when asked.

Is your problem that the old computer does not have a CD drive? If so, I
suspect the computer will not support Windows XP.

If your problem is that the old computer has a CD drive but does not support
boot from CD, the use Microsoft boot floppies for Windows XP then your
Windows XP CD to install Windows XP. You can download the boot floppies
from:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994/en-us
Note: these floppies do not support installing older versions of Window.

I have not covered all the possible combinations of problems. Perhaps if
you explain what specific problems you are having {vice jumping to a
solution}, someone could help you more.

ebay.com for plus or minus twenty bucks. Go to the computer section then
search using the term:
