I want to replace the small HD with a 120 Gb new one. I want to copy the XP partition from the old drive to the new one. I've used Partition Magic 8 and the Seagate Wizard each to try this copy operation. Neither times has it booted when the new disk is the boot disk. Always 3 messages about hardware difficulties. BIOS is OK since the new HD is under 137 G. Any suggestions about what's not going right?

What exactly are the messages?

There were 3 two or three line messages suggesting that I check for hardware difficulties. The 3rd suggested I read windows information about the problem. Thanks for your intended help. I've become so disenchanted that I just returned the drive to Best Buy for a refund. They told me doing that is not easily done unless I use disk imaging software. I'm going to spend lots of time getting rid of stuff I probably really don't need and take a breather. Thanks again.

Don,

did you set the new, copied partition active?

I now can copy the messages since they are still present on the dual boot left over after I removed the second drive. I'd like to know how to remove the non-existent drive from the boot up menu:

"Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.
Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information."

All help humbly appreciated.

You post does not make it clear if you can or cannot boot
with the new drive in place.

With respect to the boot selector: Unhide & edit the hidden
file c:\boot.ini. Remove the menu line that no longer applies,
and set "timeout=0" to prevent the menu from showing.

Save your self the pain.

this is Backup & MovePC Software.

Using backups right, one would not need
anyone PC for doing the restores......
