I have a laptop that I am going to upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro so that it
can be added to a domain. The question I have: is there a seamless way to
copy the user profile from the existing (xp home) account on the laptop to
the new (xp pro)account that is added to the domain. I would like to keep
email accounts & settings, desktop, favorites, etc. Any help appreciated.

Thanks

You might try Windows XP's native F.A.S.T. utility. It's designed expressly for
this purpose. See this link for a comprehensive discussion and how-to-use it,
even as a backup:

Be aware that passwords will not make the trip...that's by design.

Please keep in mind that the settings transfer wizard only works on the same
service pack version of XP.

If you are going to copy the settings transfer files off of your laptop,
rebuild it and then try and import the profile make sure your XP versions
have the same service pack loaded on them.

If you don't and you try and recover a pre-SP1 FAST archive on a SP1 XP
install it will fail - taking your profile with it.

If you have two laptops and want to copy the profile archive from one to the
other at least you could still upgrade the source to match the new
destination laptop (if it's running SP1).

The upgrade will probably be a success and carry over all your applications
and settings, but with any upgrade prep as if you were doing a clean install
before doing the upgrade.

If you use an Upgrade version of XP Pro then everything should be
brought forward.

However if you are going to install an OEM version of XP Pro or for
some other reason want to do a clean install of XP Pro then you can
use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in XP to save your
information and then import it back into Pro.

Good luck
