How can I copy/paste just the active application window? Like if I just want
to copy the message box, or just the design window of a dts package.

Alt-PrintScreen. Paste into Paint.

Alt-PrtScrn copies an image of the active wiundow to the clipboard. You can
then paste it wherver you want.

That pasts the entire app window. I am trying to get just the active window
in the app (i.e. the open form in MS Access without all the other Access in
the background)

Alt + Print Scrn copies the currently selected window.

Print Scrn copies the whole screen.

Those are you two choices, there are no more unless you purchase some 3rd
party software.

Edit out want you do not want with Paint. Or Edit out what you do want.

See: select part of a picture in Paint HELP.

Please try again. Holding the ALT key when you hit PRINT SCR should copy
just the ACTIVE (or selected) window

Then edit out whatever part of you don't want with an image editing program.
