I am planning to reformat the hard drive on my pc. this will, of course,
delete all the emails and contacts in outlook. how can i save the emails and
contacts so that after the reformat, i will be able to load them back onto
outlook 2003 again? Thanks for any help.

G'Day Mikeh,

ALL of your Personal Folders are stored in a File with
the extension '.pst'.

Choose a View that displays your Personal Folders.

Right-Click Personal Folders and choose
'Properties for "Personal Folders'..."

On the 'General' tab, click the 'Advanced...' button.

Next to filename you will see the full path and name
of the file that you need to preserve.

After re-installing Office, put it back where you found it.

Making certain that you can view hidden files, do a search for files with a
..pst file extension. That file contains all of your messages, contacts, etc.
If you copy that file onto a CD, you can use it to replace all of your data
after you format your hard drive.

I saw the file i need, but cannot figure out how to preserve it. I attempted
to open the file in "my computer" so that i could click write to a CD, but
the file could not be viewed. How can i get this file saved. And also, how
can i save contacts as well.

Contacts are not separate. They are included in the Outlook Data File. That
file cannot be opened other than by Outlook, nor should you ever open a file
to write it to a CD. Use Windows XP or your favorite CD writing software to
copy it to a CD.
