copy and paste figures (with captions) between documents

I'm putting together a technical document in Word 2002
I've got all the figures in a separate document. I create
captions there (From the Inser
Menu-->Reference-->Caption). I'm now in the process o
copying the figures from the document where they wer
created and pasting them into the main document. Th
problem is that when I paste the figures, the captio
numbers change!

Anyone know what is causing this?
 
That is to be expected as the captions are { SEQ } fields that increment by
one for each one in the document. If you do not want them to change, select
everything in the document with the figures and captions in it and then
press Ctrl+Shift+F9. That will convert the numbers in the captions to
ordinary text.

That makes sense, except that the sequence of figures and captions is exactly the same between the two documents....

If I use the Ctrl+Shift+F9 before I've created all the figures, won't that screw up my caption numbers too?
 
Have you tried updating the fields in the target document?

Ctrl+Shift+F9 will lock the caption numbers so that they would not change.
If however you paste them out of sequence (compared to the order in the
original document that contained them), then the numbers will not be in
sequence.
