I have a win2003 server which I would like to connect to via my XP desktop.
I have Remote desktop connection installed which is new to me and i have
just set up a Win2003 server. Obviously instead of walking backwards and
forwards to the server I would like to control it from my desktop.

What do I need to do on the 2003 server?? When I try to connect it says
'remote connections might not be enabled.'

What do i need to do???

You have to turn on and setup remote desktop on the win2k03 server. Try a
win2k03 newsgroup for exact instuctions.

It sounds like Remote Access is not running. Manage Your Server to add a role - Remote Access Server. Keep in mind that you will need to take all necessary and appropriate actions to secure your server, modems attached to the server will begin auto-answering until disabled, and access through a firewall/router will require you to open the approprate ports.
