I have been a licensed user of CoolEdit for many years. I have just got a
new Vista computer and CoolEdit will not work properly.

Anybody got a fix?

If you have Cool Edit Pro 2.0 you should have been eligible for a
free upgrade to Adobe Audition 1.0 when Adobe acquired Syntrillium.
Audition 1.0 works find in Vista except it forces the UI to switch from
Aero to Basic mode. To install Audition you have to have Cool Edit
Pro installed as a validation check. Once Audition is up and running
you can uninstall Cool Edit.

Which version of Cool Edit are you trying to use ?

No you don't need Cool Edit installed. All you need is the REGISTRY KEYS
installed. I had discovered this when I upgraded to Audition 1.0. From
that point. I just saved the Cool Edit registry keys to a .reg file ,and
before installing Audition I merged the .reg file into the registry. It
worked like a charm every time.

I would suggest you use Audition 2 from Adobe - the successor of CoolEdit.
This works with Vista, but it will disable Aero while it's running.

Are you sure it disables Aero when its running? I found this happened with
some large apps, like ArchiCAD and Photoshop, but updating the Java VM in
Control Panel to the latest versions fixed this problem. Have you tried
this?

CoolEdit 2000, not Pro. Is there a fix for this?

Does the "2000" correspond to the year 2000 itself? As in "this app is
7 years old"?

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?

The version is called CoolEdit 2000 (presumably because it was published in
the year 2000). It is an excellent program and works perfectly under Windows
XP.

I updated to Java Runtime version 6 from www.sun.com
Didn't fix the Audition problem.
Why Aero should be affected by Audition is anyone's guess.

I'm using my Windows Server 2003 to post from atm, so I can't check, but
this machine's latst Java update is v1.5.0._11. I just used the update in
the Control Panel applet itself.
