Cookie Handling Problem

In the 'Privacy' tab of IE6 'Internet Options', if I click on the
'Sites...' button, I should be able to maintain a list of 'Per Site
Privacy Actions'. That is to have a list of which site's cookies I want
to always block or always keep.

Expect I should be able to ... but the problem is if I add an address
here to this list, then click 'OK' and 'OK' again to exit 'Internet
Properties', and then return back into the 'Per Site Privacy Actions'
box, I find it has not kept that address in the list. This occurs
whether I have asked to 'Block' or to 'Keep'. (Note: I do not have
'Override Automatic Cookie Handling' in 'Advanced Privacy Settings'
selected.)

I also did have a list of addresses there that I had accumulated over
the years, which now seems to have vanished mysteriously.

Please could anyone help me get this working again.

(This is IE6 on WinXP SP2 Home Edition.)

Thanks

Thanks for your enquiry, Paul. I too have recently noticed this on one
(only one) of my WinXP SP2 Home machines. I don't know what's
caused/causing it but I'm investigating this behaviour currently. If you'd
like to assist, read on.

What make and model machine do you have (e.g., Dell Dimension 4600)? Was
WinXP SP2 preinstalled or did you upgrade to SP2?

Look in Add/Remove Programs: What Windows XP Hotfixes have been installed
since 01 Jan-05? Please list the Hotfix (e.g., KB 887742) and the install
date.

Look in the list of sites in Privacy: Are '.lop.com' and '.gator.com' [sic]
the only sites listed?

Which if any of the following do you have installed and use?

Ad-aware SE v1.05

Spybot v1.3 or 1.4 beta

SpywareBlaster v3.3

MS Windows AntiSpyware Beta v1.0.509

WinPatrol v9.0

IE SpyAd

Thank you.

Hi PA Bear

Thanks for your response. Its reassuring to know that its not just my
machine affected. I'd gladly assist. I've answered each of your
questions inline ...

My machine is a Dell Dimension 2100. I upgraded to SP2 from a CD I
ordered from Microsoft.
Look in Add/Remove Programs: What Windows XP Hotfixes have been
installed since 01 Jan-05? Please list the Hotfix (e.g., KB 887742)
and the install date.

From Add/Remove Programs, XP Hotfixes I've installed since Jan '05 are
(with installation date in
brackets):

KB 890175 (13 Jan)
KB 888302 (10 Feb)
KB 890047 (10 Feb)
KB 887472 (10 Feb)
KB 885250 (10 Feb)
KB 891781 (10 Feb)
KB 867282 (10 Feb)
KB 888113 (10 Feb)
KB 873333 (10 Feb)
KB 887742 (26 Feb)

Basically my machine should be up-to-date with Windows Update critical
fixes.
Look in the list of sites in Privacy: Are '.lop.com' and '.gator.com'
[sic] the only sites listed?

Yes, these are indeed the only sites that were listed. Though, I have
since removed them from the list in order to see whether they came back.
(They didn't.) It would seem that we have similar symptoms on our
machines.
Which if any of the following do you have installed and use?

Ad-aware SE v1.05

Spybot v1.3 or 1.4 beta

SpywareBlaster v3.3

MS Windows AntiSpyware Beta v1.0.509

WinPatrol v9.0

IE SpyAd

Of these I have Ad-aware SE v1.05, Spybot v1.3, SpwareBlaster v3.3 and
IE SpyAd.

So, what are your thoughts on this at the moment?

Thanks /very/ much, Rick!

Paul: The 03 Mar-05 Spybot update is causing the problem. See the thread
Rick cites.

To fix it, you may download the attached zip file, extract its contents to
your desktop then doubleclick on it to run the REG file. It will remove the
offending Registry entries and make the list of Allowed/Blocked sites
visible again. (Right-click on the REG file > Open with [notepad] or Edit
to see its contents.)

I have tested this REG file and it does the job here with no harmful
side-affects.

Caution: After running the fix, if you click on the Spybot>Immunize green
cross and re-Immunize, the offending keys and behaviour will return.

Yup, that worked! Thanks to both of you. I did also notice that is
necessary to run the REG file in all user accounts set-up on the PC.

Well, hopefully, Spybot S&D will release a new update very soon to
correct the problem.

Cheers

Hello All,

Does anyone know if it's safe to immunize after applying the 3/19 update?
I'm not doing it until someone gives me the green light.
