COOD11CD-Mediaplayer will not play my movies

Wondering if anyone could help....I have downloaded songs, and mediaplayer
plays them without any problem, but I just downloaded a movie, and a tv
episode, but when I try to play them, an error message comes up saying that
mediaplayer has an unknown error (Code COOD11CD)

My computer is new, and I have never played movies on it before, so perhaps
there is something I have to set up?

The movie might be a DVD encoded file (appears as AVI or
MPEG but has a 3rd party codec underneath the AVI or MPG
extension.
