Is it possible to download a previous version of
Powerpoint that allows you to convert directly to an
adobe pdf file?

My previous version allowed this, the latest doesn't.

My guess is that your previous version had a toolbar and menu item that you
could click to make a PDF. This gadget's called PDFMaker and it's installed by
Acrobat when the Acrobat installer finds that you already have Office
installed.

Depending on what version of PPT you have now and what version of Acrobat, you
may simply need to re-run the installer to have PDFMaker installed to the
current PPT version.

If nothing else, you should still have an AdobePDF or Acrobat Distiller printer
driver installed. You can also make a PDF by opening the PPT, choosing File,
Print, choosing one of those two drivers and printing.
