converting ram files

That would be illegal I think, anyway Real went to a lot of trouble to stop
it happening.

However there used to be a utility called streambox that could do it, but
that in itself was somewhat doubtful... and someone decided that streambox
needed to be "Hacked" as well...

Here's a bit of info I found on the old program which I hasten to add is
quoted only for interest and information purposes...

streambox vcr beta 31 is the most stable and feature-packed in all cases
*except* that it seems to fail on windows media files. SO, if you want to
record windows media files, you need to use beta 30, but otherwise use beta
31.

StreamBox VCR is a brilliant example of reverse engineering; it will take
the address of a non-recordable real audio file (or in fact a long list of
such files), decode them, contact the proper realaudio servers, and bully
the server into sending it the raw files which it then saves to your
harddrive.

BUT, the program is naughty - every time you try to download a file it first
tries to contact a streambox.com server over the internet to check whether
you have permission to download that file. It also makes you register with
the company when you first run the program and sends your user name and
email every time you try to download a file, suggesting that they might be
planning to track information about the files you download over time.

This crack bypasses the code in the program that tries to connect to the
streambox server. AND it re-enables the ability to record realaudio
rtsp/pnm streams, that was the hard part.

It should go without saying that this crack is being offered for educational
purposes only. Thankz go out to perfx for the patching utility, and to the
keyboard caper for the great tutorialz.

See the original streambox readme files for info about what's new with this
version of streambox vcr.

*Sometime around 12/7/99, RealAudio obtained an injunction against
StreamBox, preventing them from distributing the StreamBox VCR program
(www.streambox.com for more info). The StreamBox VCR program has never been
commercially distributed, and I'm not sure what this implies about the
legality of obtaining and using it with or without this crack. The program
itself simply asks you not to use it for commercial purposes.

Actually, you can't convert a .ram file, which is a text file, and a
tiny one at that, to an .mp3 file, which is an audio file.

I suspect you unknowingly mean the Real Media audio file to which the
..ram file points. (You can look at the contents of a .ram file with
Notepad, if you like.)

The first trick is to get the Real Media file on your hard drive, if you
want to convert it. However, you need to ask if you really want a
conversion. Perhaps just ending up with an .mp3 file which would be
difficult to distinguish from the Real Media file audibly, is
sufficient.

If so, you may not need to download the Real Media file at all. Many
late model sound cards (Soundblaster Live! and Audigy series, for
example, among others) provide the capability of recording what you're
listening to. Onboard sound systems and older cards seldom offer that.
In those cases, software such as Total Recorder can capture what you
hear through your computer speakers.

If you should should download the actual Real Media file, both of the
above approaches also work well. Once you have the file, though,
Streambox Ripper (rather than VCR) and some other true conversion
software DO exist.
