I've been hunting around a bit for a program to convert some old files
off of a 5.25 floppy for a friend (old scientific data he wants).

Found one called "Conversion Plus", which would probably do the job,
but <ouch>, its $70!

Anyone have possible freeware suggestions?
What format are they ( .doc etc )?
Plenty of conversion apps out there...

Some sort of .doc format. Could be apple, could be pc. "Conversion
Plus" claims to convert *any* of the old popular formats, and I was
hoping there might be something similar that was freeware.

Thanks,

Mike

What file extension(s) do these files have, and do you know the name of
the programme with which they were created, and under which OS?

More info, if you can. For instance: "IBM" floppies? Apple ][?
DEC? Lisa?

I think they were either .doc files from an apple computer (possibly a
II or IIe); I assume if they were older Microsoft .doc from a PC, I
could actually open them with current software....maybe I am wrong
about that.

You might give this Webware site a try:

DocMorph

Document conversion tools (50 types of files) Convert to PDF; TIFF;

If you could upload a sample file to:

http://www.yousendit.com/

and post the link here in this thread, maybe I or someone else could
take a crack at finding a conversion utility.

I have ClarisWorks for Windows (OK it's payware, but very old), which
has potential, I think, for something useful.

Susan, I have some pdf files that won't let me select and copy the text.
I guess that's some form of copy protection. Do you (or anyone else) know
if DocMorph can convert pdfs like this to text? TIA.

Apparently not. On the "50 types of files" page linked to the above
URL, you'll find:

<quote>
While DocMorph and MyMorph create PDF files from any of the types of
files listed below, neither accepts PDF files that are submitted to
the system.
</quote>

What you can and can't do with a .pdf file is, for the most part,
determined by how the original author created it.

Thanks for that.
