Converting from Counterfeit to real Windows

I had an independent IT guy build my PC. It has been working fine until I
found out the copy of Windows XP Pro was bogus.
He was moving out of the area, when I went back to him complaining, and to
make a long story short, I ended up leaving with a sealed, genuine copy of
Win XP Pro SP2. It appears to be the version that is used by PC builders as
it is not the usual retail box.
So now I have the real deal, but how do I convert to this authentic version?
I tried a couple of things I found on the Knowledge base, but the window that
comes up wants more characters than the five, 5 character group that is on
the holographic label on the package.
What do I do now? I am on my own since the builder didn't appreciate my
comments on his installing bogus s/w on my machine, besides he's no longer
around. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Today, with great enthusiasm and quite emphatically,
=?Utf-8?B?UVg=?= laid this on an unsuspecting readership ...

I dunno, sue the bastard, or maybe buy a legit license of Windoze?
Didn't it occur to you during the build of your PC that the CD
didn't look right, as an OEM version should? Even OEM CDs have
authentic M$ markings and a legit OEM serial number and activation
code.

The holographic thingy you're referring to is how the entire world
recognizes a real M$ CD from a bogus one, so if yours doesn't have
this, maybe you're toast?

I do NOW have a real copy of Windows, with the holograph and the Five groups
of 5 characters on the holographic label,
What I initially got from the guy who built the machine, was a carton with
all the boxes from the hardware I selected, and a stack of CD's in it. The
PC has worked fine without a problem, so I had no reason to go digging
through the box of hardware stuff (extra cables, connectors, jumpers, board
boxesk disks, etc). Recently there was a Windows upadate that put the
warning about the "Counterfeit Windows" on my log in screen. That's when I
found out that the origninal Windows install was counterfeit, or was a leaked
key or something like that.
Anyway, what I got from him, is a real, sealed copy of Windows XP SP2, OEM
Software with the MS holograph on the label. What I need to do is convert the
copy on the machine now to the real copy, preferably without having to
reinstall windows, and lose everything I have on the machine now.
Again, any assistance is appreciated.

"A fool and his money are soon parted" - Benjamin Franklin in "Poor
Richard's Almanac", in this case meaning "you should've looked at
what you paid money for, you didn't, and now you're toast so live
with it". Your solution is straight-forward but not cheap - you
must buy a legitimate license for Windoze, either retail or from
your lost computer builder bud.

Next time, look to see what's in that box of CDs and misc. junk.
