does converting a Fat partition to an NTFS one have any adverse effects on

No, but as always, backup your data first.

I'd run a chkdsk /f on my drive first, just to make sure there are not
any FAT32 file system problems.

Thanks Al

Generally, no.

However, it is ALWAYS a good idea to back up your data before performing ANY
major surgery...

Also, it will go much faster if you defrag first.

You can safely convert the partition to NTFS whenever desired,
without having to format the partition and reinstall everything. As
always when performing any serious changes, back up any important data
before proceeding, just in case. A little advance preparation is also
strongly recommended, so you can avoid any performance hits caused by
the default cluster size:

maybe a silly question but will system restore restore all settings if
something does go wrong with NTFS conversion?
What and how should I backup files and settings? Should I use the windows xp
back up utility?

Thanks everybody, very helpful
