Converting Audio cassettes to wmv or wma files

I have a lot of audio cassette tapes that I want to convert to CD
I was given an impression that a jumper cable from the mirophone or earphone plugs would do the trick
If this is true, how do I get started?
 
I'm not attempting to sell anything here, but I've done this using Roxio's
Creator 6 software. Simply run a dual cable from the audio out of your
cassette player (optionally through a cheap pre-amp if necessary) and into
the line-in of your pc.

Next....will be my LPs and 45s!!
