Sorry, earlier post is incorrect: All of a sudden, word 97 convert file msg
box opens when I try to open a word file.
It says "convert file from"
Thanks again

Have you tried specifying "Word Document" in the converter dialog box?
Also, typically there is a converter selected in the list. Which one
is Word selecting?

Hi Beth,
Ok, I unchecked "Confirm Conversion, now it opens automatically with Word.
I opened the document and it's columns were aligned correctly and the Logo
showed up as it did before this problem.
HOWEVER, now I've just opened it again, and columns a a little out of
alignment and the Logo is missing.
What might I do?
Thanks,
Steve

I kinda need to know the answer to my second question. :-)

Turn "Confirm Conversion" back on and open the file. Which converter
is selected in the list?

If you don't have "Confirm Conversions" turned on then Word will
automatically open the document with the converter it "thinks" should
be used - the one you see selected in the list.

If the RTF format is selected, and it isn't saved as RTF, then there
is something in the file that Word is interpreting as RTF format. As a
result it is automatically opening your document using RTF instead of
the Word Document format.

You'll need to keep the Confirm Conversions option turned on and when
it displays select the appropriate format. Then make sure you use
File/Save As and save it as a Word Document file type.

If this started happening on new documents only then go to
Tools/Options/Save and make sure the default Save file type is Word
Documents and not RTF.

Save as IS defaulted to word doc.
What is the "appropriate" program to convert from? The list doesn't include
Word 97, which is what I have.
This is happening to ALL of my Word docs all of a sudden, (after downloading
MS Word updates, converters), not just the new ones.
They ARE saved as Word doc, but still want to open as RTF, and the columns
are not aligned properly and a logo is not showing up.
Please help!
Steve

Is it possible that the Word documents were created in Word 97 but saved in
Word 6.0/95 format (from unpatched Word 97, which actually used RTF for
that)?

I was wondering if your default Save As had been changed and whether
you were inadvertently saving your documents as RTF. :-)

If it just started happening then have you ran a virus scan lately?
Word simply reads a portion of your document and selects the
appropriate converter based on the file contents. So something is
stored in the documents which leads Word to think they are RTF.

In the interim, keep the Confirm Conversions option turned on and
select Word Documents.
