I'm looking for something that will convert a scanned photo into a black &
white suitable for printing.

Thanks in advance.

Irfanview (Image>Convert to Grayscale) should do it.

I'm sure it can be done in The Gimp, but in Elements or Photoshop this
is the easiest way:

* new adjustment layer (hue/saturation), call it "color"
* new adjustment layer (hue/saturation), call it "bw"
* totally desaturate the bw layer
* on the color layer, select "color" as the layer type, and adjust hue
to taste

Basically any image editing program can do this.

Free ones: GIMP, Photofiltre, Pixia

Commercial ones: Photoshop(Elements), PHOTO-PAINT, Fireworks, Picture Window

Basically any Photo Manager can do this.

Free ones: XnView, Faststone Image Viewer

Commercial ones: Thumbsplus, ACDsee

Basically any Image Viewer can do this.

Free one: Irfanview.

This list is not inclusive, but just the ones I have used and remember.
There are many others

Google any of these names to get the appropriate url.

Hope this helps.
