How do you intend to measure this? Gallons/second? Will this be at a
normal running temperature? My suggestion is to:

1. simply drive down to the gas station (one far enough away that you
warm your motor thoroughly)

2. fill your tank

3. push the truck over out of the way

4. fire up the engine and run the engine at an idle and use a stop watch
to time how long you want to do this

5. shut off the motor

6. push it back over to the pump

7. fill up your tank again and notice how much it takes

8. divide gallons used by time you ran the truck at idle.

Are you serious?

I doubt it.

Greater accuracy would be achieved by idling the motor until the fuel
tank is empty.

john...i am very serious about finding out how much gas a chevrolet 3/4 ton
pu uses in idle..as in just warming up in the morning..it has a 5.7 ltr
engine and its a work truck with gps installed...one truck out of many in a
fleet and the boss has issued a 10 min. warm up time or fines are to be
given out...we are in the north central area so cold and ice and snow are a
issue for all of us.....
i am having REAL! trouble finding out how to calculate idle time per gallon

ps. the boss says we are wasting one u.s gallon an hour by idling...i know
he is wrong but i need to have proof for my case for the rest of us..
the trucks are from 2002 to 2005 yr....a semi truck only uses 3/4 to 1 1/2
gall of diesle an hr.in idle

Similar to the above post, but it would probably be more a ball park
figure, than an exact measurement.

On your home from work stop at a gas station and filler up (don't forget
your millage if you use the trip meter all the better don't forget to
reset it), drive home, have supper, etc.. when you get up warm it up for
ten minutes like the boss wants, and go about your business for the day,
and fill her up at the end of the day.
Do this again the next day, the only difference is, don't let her idle
for ten minutes (your boss will understand if you tell him it was a one
day thing).

Now you do the math.

By the way just a side note, if the boss is paying the gas bill and/or
providing the vehicle for that matter, why care, either way it's better
than walking?

Use Roger's detailed recommendation, and give your boss the figures you end
up using for your calculation.

Another note - when you fill up, go to the same station and (preferably) to
the same pump, and don't 'top it off' after the nozzle clicks off
automatically. That way you will get a more accurate reading.

gunner,

If the cheap SOB <g> is that worried about it, why not install block
or oil pan heaters, and eliminate almost all of the warm up time?
