Conversion Cable

Please help!? I am connecting my desktop to my laptop with a conversion
cable, and I don't know what to do next. I try to run the network connection
wizard and it says that my network cable is unplugged. Does this mean I have
a bad adapter or cable? Or am I completely missing something? Thanks for any
help anyone can give.

Please describe the "conversion cable", and which ports it connects to. If it
connects to the Ethernet ports (they look like fat phone jacks), is this a
CROSSOVER cable, as opposed to a PATCH cable?
