Control Panel page loses its own settings (column widths)

When I call up Control Panel, I'm getting two fairly narrow columns
with text, plus an empty third column which takes up the right half of
the page . The Names area is wide enough to show most names, the
Comments area only contains a few words.

Although I'm able to stretch things out so that CP reappears correctly
for the duration of the session, a reboot puts things back to narrow
columns. I tried looking in the registry but was unable to identify
Control Panel itself versus the areas controlled by the panel.

Another thing is that the scroll bar extends through the line that
says Names and Comments rather than stopping there. It ends with the
logo button.

Hold CTRL and press the + key on the numeric keypad once.
Press CTRL while you close the CP window.

Holy cow! Thanks so much, Thorsten. I was searching all over for the
solution to this problem.
