anyone have any idea why the items in the control panel won't stay in
alphabetical order ?

Open control panel and to the menu > View > change details and select what
you want (make sure "name" has a check). Press 'OK', and right click an
empty spot in the control panel window and select under 'arrange by' > name.
There is no reason I could think of why it wouldn't work unless you have the
category view on.

Most likely the index for saved views is full & control panel's view is being deleted to make room
for new ones.

Is your machine running SP2?

Kelly's tweak should fix the problem, but all saved folder views will be lost.

Line 2: Increase Folder View Size Limit to 8000

I don't have sp2 but my problem didn't start until about a month ago .

not sure what you mean by this ....Most likely the index for saved views is
full

If you're pre SP2 and you've never used Kelly's tweak, the Explorer remembers the view settings for
the last 400 folders you have viewed. The limit is on the "Nodeslot" entries that can be found
under the following reg key and its subkeys:

"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU"

It is this key that serves as the index to the numbered entries found under:

"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags"

which store folder views.

When the limit has been reached, older views are discarded to make room for new ones. But the
method explorer uses to determine which view to delete is simple and folders near the root of the
namespace (the Desktop) are more vulnerable to deletion. As a simple example, assume you have no
folders on your desktop other than the My Documents, My Computer, and Recycle Bin. Explorer checks
to see which of these was accessed the furthest back in time (what is the proper expression for the
opposite of 'most recently accessed' ?!?). If it was My Computer, and all the drives were accessed
more recently than Control Panel, then Control Panel loses -- it's the oldest view found -- and it
gets deleted.

How about 'least recently accessed'. That might work On the other hand it may
just generate a roundtable discussion. <g>
