I have no sound. The control panel volume control is
disabled, greyed out. It is checked to display volume on
task bar, it's not there.

In fact all of the selections on the second (Audio) tab
are also disabled.

Hardware check says the sound card is working properly.

Suggestions please.

first thing that comes to mind is have you got the correct drivers installed
for your sound card, try the manufacturers site to see if there are updated
drivers available

The sound worked until about two months ago with the
same hardware.
The difference was that I tried to install McAfee virus
check and it demolished everything. I had to reinstall
Win200 and removed a couple of hundred registry entries.

Bill,

Did you just upgrade by any chance? What did you do just before this happened. Go to the
Manufacturer site for your Sound Card and get the drivers specifically for W2K.
