When Windows XP restarts I get the Welcome screen and am
told to click on a user name. When I click on a user
name (I've tried all 4), Windows automatically restarts
again. This happens continually, so I can't actually get
into a user account. How can I fix this? Thanks!

When the problem surfaced, I had just ran Symantec
(corporate 8.x), which found a virus which was
quarantined, and then had installed the driver for an HP
scanner, and was restarting after that install.

Can you get into Safe Mode? If so try removing the scanner driver and see if
that cures the problem. At a guess, though, i would say it was a virus
problem (Sasser worm) that may be causing the problem. Try the symantec
site. There should be a Sasser worm removal tool..

I think it was a coincidence with the other installs. I think it was the
microsoft updates that recently loaded improperly and that you may have to
remove and re-install.

If you cannot get into safe mode, you may have to tap F8 as it boots and
choose the "Last known good configuration" to get it to go all the way
into windows. Then se my post about the KB839645 update problem solutions

I had something similar happen . When it ask for when I
entered my usual account name and password it said it
wasn't valid. In my case it kept asking for it. Heres
how I got around it:
I rebooted into safe mode. (During reboot hit F8 before
white line going across in boot process)
You will have an extra account - adminstrator. Use that
one. It won't ask for passord. Reply yes to can fit
message.
Than I ran an error check on my hard drive ( Select my
computer , right click properties on your hard drive,
select tools ,select error checking - check now, check
box Automatically fix file system errors. Select Start
You'll need to reboot. Error Scan must run outside of
windows. Reboot your system.

This clean up my user account it may clean up yours.

Thanks for the help and suggestions!! Much appreciated.
FYI in the end it turned out to be the scanner - the
precision scan software (rather old) was incompatible
with XP. In safe mode, uninstalled and then downloaded
something from HP to fix it.
