Is there a way to get the left "Contacts" pane like we used to have in OE in
XP? Just by double clicking the mail address initiated the mail...very
handy.

No.
But you can add the Contacts Gadget to the Vista Sidebar.

No, but since the contacts are now stored in a folder, you can just leave
the folder open or minimized all the time....
