A friend lost his contacts by installing a new palm pilot and
had the desktop set so that palm over wrote contacts. I can
get software to try to find deleted info from harddrive.

Would the contact info be in outlooks .pst file???

Thanks

Thanks Brian. What does "overwrite character 7 to 13 with spaces"
mean especially in regard to "with spaces".

Since deleted contacts don't go in the deleted items folder, I don't see
how this could possibly work anyway.
Thanks

Put blanks in characters 7 to 13.

Yes, they do. Perhaps not with a sync, but if you select one and click
Delete, it will.

It might work because you may overwrite the portion of the PST that says
they're not there any more. When an item is removed from a PST, it's not
actually taken from the file. The location where it was stored is marked
for reuse.

Thanks Brian,
I'm going to give it a try this afternoon!!!
If it works, you are a HERO!!! If not, you are
still a friend!!!

Does that mean characters 7 - 13 in the very first row of info??
There are many rows. I tried putting spaces in those characters
and got nothing.

So does them mean that a .pst only get's larger? And if the file
is there, I should be able to get some of the contacts???
Thanks Brian

Beats me. I've never used the technique, never having needed it before.
Perhaps you can send an Email to the author of the web site containing the
tip.
So does them mean that a .pst only get's larger?

Not necessarily, but sometimes. When an item is removed from a PST, the
space it occupied becomes "white space". The data is still in the space,
but there's no way to address it because the space has been marked for
reuse. If you compact the PST, then the space is actually removed from the
PST. Compaction can be done manually. There is also a periodic automatic
compaction.
And if the file
is there, I should be able to get some of the contacts???

It's possible because the technique in the tip to which I directed you
actually corrupts the PST, causing the Inbox Repair Tool to try to rebuild
it. In the process, it may remark some of the white space as in use,
thereby giving you access to the data in it again.

Good luck!

I don't really understand it, but today they were in the deleted.
I moved them to Contacts and presto, they are ALL back.
Amazing. I don't know why I didn't see them the other day.
I thought it was a failure. Weird but who cares!!!! I'm happy!!!
Thanks a bunch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
