If I called microsoft for support do I have to have an actual win xp cd or is the recovery disk all I need. This computer didnt come with an acctual xp cd. Can I?

If it did not come with an Actual CD, then you do not get support from
Microsoft, but from the OEM you got Windows XP from - in your case, likely
the same people you bought the PC from.
The reason Microsoft does not provide support (normally) for these copies is
because the OEM has certain privileges on how they can change the CD.
Technically, they could install spyware and viruses for you in the
beginning, although there is probably some legal/moral issues there. So
Microsoft does not normally provide you, the end customer, support for these
products. You must go to Dell/Compaq.whomever you bought the CD/computer
from. Those people can get help from Microsoft.

that sucks cause this is an hp computer and they only give 1 year suport on it and thats up and the store this computer was bought at doesnt give software suport.

besides, even if you had an XP cd you only get 2 free supports then you're on your own.

That is one of the many reasons you pay less for your OEM Windows than
retail Windows.
There is at least one exception.
Issues directly related to Windows Update are free for all owners of
Windows regardless if retail or OEM.
