Is there any software available that will read through an avi or mpeg
file and create a contact sheet (jpeg) that shows scenes contained in
the movie file?

<disclaimer>In the US it's illegal to rip images from a video for
commercial use..</disclaimer> You can use most DVD/Video editing
software to shuttle through the movies to the correct image, and do a
screen capture. Not sure which freeware is best for this, because we use
AVID.

WIndows MovieMaker allows import of AVIs and taking screenshots from
the preview of your film. You run the preview (which I think is
usually on the right side of the screen). When an image comes up that
you want, you click the little camera icon on which is the last icon to
the right of the controls of the preview player.

This is of course tedious for a big film if you want a contact
sheet...but if you have the AVI already split into the scenes, you just
click on each scene in the middle of the screen and do a screen
capture. Sorry if this is not helpful.
