Consistency Check

Last night, I think for the first time since starting to use WinXP back in
2002, I had a fairly new Gateway computer tell me during boot-up that it
needed to run a consistency check on my hard drive. This startled me
because the computer had shut-itself down.

What would trigger this type of a check? Is it something I should be
concerned with? Would it mean I'm having hard drive issues?

Thanks

I need to make it clear that the computer didn't abnormally shut itself
down. I was telling it to do a restart...and it shut itself down as part of
that process.

Without going all technical on you, it means that there may be some problems
with file system on your hard disk. Such things happen from time to time and
when they do, Windows typically runs an error checking routine and takes
care of the problems, which are usually minor. In your case, it sounds like
Windows was shut down improperly.

It's not anything you need to be concerned with, unless it starts to happen
frequently.

Ok, thanks Ted.

If Windows was shut down improperly...it was it's own fault (so-to-speak).
I was trying to restart the system. I do recall seeing an error box quickly
flash up as the computer was shutting down, but I couldn't read it enough to
know what the problem was. I've booted it a couple of times since without
anything happening, so I'll assume it was a freak thing.

Other possibities:

New software installatuin (or update) which caused the issue??

New hardware install, or driver update???

If you want to eliminate your hard drive, back it up. The, download and run
the hard drive diagnostics that the hard drive manufacturer has available on
their web site.

Hey guys--similar problem I'm hoping you can help with:

I've got an Acer Laptop PC running a Celeron processor. About once every
two shutdowns/standbys, the subsequent bootup is painfully slow as we get a
twotone blue screen and the following verbiage:

Checking file system on C:
The type of file system is FAT32

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the
disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.
windows will now check the disk
volume serial number is 3200-180E
windows is verifying file sand folders...
__percent complete // File and folder verifications is complete.
windows is verifying free space...
__percent completed....

The process takes about 20 minutes to "check the disk for consistency." Any
thoughts on how I can fix the problem once and for all and end these
interminable bootups?

Thanks,
Pete

Your hard disk may be failing. You should run the disc manufacturer's diagnostics (available from their web site.)

If you're going to ask a new question, start a new thread. What you did is known as "hijacking" a thread, and it's not appreciated in newsgroups.
