my xp pro has taken to deciding it wants a consistency check on bootup. It
does files and folders, then it does free space, all without announcing
finding or fixing anything, and merrily says there are no problems. But it
takes two and a quarter hours to do this each time.

Any hints on what's the problem greatfully received; is it safe to skip the
checking?

thanks

no, when I boot up I get a blue screen which says one or more of your disks
needs checking for consistency

I don't know what consistency is, but I know it takes a long time
