I am currently running Win98SE, and am considering
upgrading to Windows XP. My question is two-fold, which
version should I go with Home or Professional? My second
question is should I get the Full or Upgrade version? What
does the full version have that the upgrade doesn't?

I am a S/W engineer, I will be occasionally using my
machine for development. But mostly for Home usage.

Thanks in advance,
-Tim

See www.microsoft.com/windows.

1st priority is to ensure your hardware is up to the task of running XP.
Microsoft provides tools and guidance.

Also, look at the web pages which describes the differences between Home
and Pro, based your own needs.

Thanks, I know I can upgrade the question is, would I be
better off buying the Full version or the Upgrade version
of XP. Sometimes these upgrade versions to have dll's and
other important files you may need in case of a problem.

XP Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in all respects,
except that Professional has a few features (mostly related to
networking and security) missing from Home. For most (but not
all) home users, these features aren't needed, would never be
used, and buying Professional instead of Home is a waste of
money.

If you qualify for the Upgrade version, you should certainly get
it, since it's substantially cheaper. There is *nothing* in the
Full version that's not in the Upgrade version.

The only difference between the two is in the qualification
requirements to use them. Both versions can do clean
installations or upgrades. However if you use the Upgrade version
to do a clean installation, you have to insert the CD of a
previous qualifying version as proof of ownership when prompted
to do so.

The only difference between the full and upgrade versions is what the
installer routine looks for before it begins installing. In the
upgrade version, the installer must find proof of a qualifying product
(you can put in a CD of an earlier OS, if you have no OS installed
your machine). The full version doesn't do this check, it simply
installs the system. You pay more bucks, you don't have to have a
qualifying product.
