Hi

i've got a 56k modem, but it's running quite slow at
around 38k, it just takes ages to download
anything....Any advice on how to improve on this?

thx

Is it a Win modem?
What kind of download speed do you get? If you download a file in IE, what
is the transfer rate?

Your connection speed has very little to do with your PC.
It is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)and phone lines
that are to blame. Some newer modems such as U.S.
Robotics can increase speed. You can try different phone
numbers from your ISP to check which one gives the best
performance, or go DSL (high speed) for a price.

The speed a modem runs at is limited by your local telephone lines. 38K isn't so bad. I now use DSL, but when I used a 56K dialup modem, I never got over 28.8 and rarely over 26.4.

My ISP had me go to Control panel,Phone &
Modems,Modems,Properties,Advanced. In Extra initialzation commands type "&f"
(without quotes). Have hit over 90 kbs on downloads since then.Only problem
modem connect sound cannot be shut down while dialing. Give it a try.
