Connection using workgroup thru router is very slow

I just got a brand new box with dual core (the works). I have a Linksys
router and set the old PC and new to the same workgroup name. Great I
can see the other computer and can copy the files to the new PC.

It is unbearably slow. I could burn DVD's and transfer faster.

I notice that when I have the network folders open in Explorer that it
goes to a wait cursor about once every second. I have set the check
for network printers to off but it is still a problem.

Any ideas??

Thanks in advance.

Connection is wired.

What kind of network connection - wired or wireless?

Start by looking for a hardware problem - bad patch cable, bad network card,
bad port on the router. Also be sure you don't have a speed or duplex
mismatch between either computer and the router.

Ok, I replaced cables (not network card). On the one box cables and
network card work fine with internet. On the other box same thing.

One box XP Pro (old box).
New box XP MCE

When I use Explorer to see files on old box the wait cursor comes on
every 2 seconds. There are times you cannot even navigate. I turned
off the check for network printers but I think there is another
registry setting to get past this.

Why is this so hard MS. This is one of those times that all the
bitching about MS seems to have some merit.

Lloyd Sheen (sorry for the rant but when you can upload to the Internet
and then download to another machine faster than networking them,
something is terribly wrong).
