connection unavailable

I have a netgear MA111 wireless modem on my main PC and the adapter on my PC
in the other room. Problem is that whenever my PC with the adapter is
shutdown for any reason when I reboot I loose my connection and it takes
forever for me to get it back. Device manager says it is working properly.
When I click on the PC icon (which is red) I go to connection tab it's set to
Ad hoc, first available access point but I don't get a signal. (says signal
is unavailable) If I play around with it sometimes it will just start working
all of a sudden. There is no reason why sometimes it work and sometimes it
doesn't. I know it can get a signal because once it starts working it will
stay running until that PC goes down. Could there be a problem with firewalls
on my main PC which blocks the other one from accessing the signal? Sorry so
long, any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Jeri,

How exactly is your network configured? Do you have a wireless
router or access point?

A Netgear MA111 is a wireless USB adapter. It's normally used
to connect a PC to a wireless router which is then connected by
ethernet cable to a modem which is connected to the internet.

Ad hoc mode is used to setup a computer to computer network.
Are you running Internet Connection Sharing on your main PC? If
not, any wireless adapters should be set for Infrastructure
mode.

Bottom line, if you don't have a wireless router, get one.

Thanks for responding, your right it is set to infrastructure. I have a wireless router setup on my main PC which is connected to a comcast cable modem. For some reason my netgear adapter will not pickup a signal it says ``wireless connection unavailable''. If i set my connection to Ad-hoc I will be able to send a signal but I cannot receive a signal. Like I said before sometimes after switching back and forth it will eventually connect to the infruastructure setting and then I'm good to go. But as of now after trying for hours (my electricity shut off so my PC went down) I cannot get it to work. I have looked into setting up a home network but I don't think it really has anything to do with that since it has worked before without a network. Someone told me they have to power down their router everytime to get their wireless adapter to pick up a signal but I have tried that and it doesn't work for me. Do you think there could be a firewall blocking the signal? Thanks again for

First off, go to Netgear's web site and download the latest
driver for your adapter.

Check the label on your adapter and make sure you download the
driver for the correct version.

Once you've installed the latest driver, logon to your router's
web interface from your main computer. Consult the
documentation that came with your router for how this is done.
Once you've logged on, look for a section that will allow you
to change the wireless settings. You want to change the channel
that the router uses for wireless connections from the default
channel to channel 1. If you're not able to do this, post back
with details for your router (make and model #).

Make sure you're using Infrastructure Mode.

If you're still not able to connect, you might want to contact
Netgear's support at 1-888- Netgear. You can also contact them
via email. They have their own support forums which you may
find helpful.

FYI #1, a firewall should not prevent you from establishing
communications between your wireless adapter and the router. If
this was a firewall problem, you'd be able to connect to the
router (the network connection icon would be green) but you'd
have a problem connecting to the internet.

FYI #2, after a power failure, it's usually a good idea to
leave the computers off and disconnect the power cables from
the modem and router. Once the power comes back on you plug the
cable back into the modem first. Once the modem's up and
running, reconnect power to the router. Finally, restart the
computers.
