This may or may not be off the topic of Windows XP but perhaps someone could
help.My XP computer is beginning to suffer from intermittant connection
problems.IE/OE can be working perfectly, yet 5mins later the connection to
the server is lost and a password is requested. When this is supplied the
connection may or may not re-made.Reboot and again maybe, maybe not. It's all
very frustrating as I don't know where to start. looking.Server Tech Support
say the problem is not at their end and have walked me through a restoration
of services.Fine but three hours later,it all goes wrong again. They suggest
maybe "software' is the problem FWTW I can only wonder if it's the modem or
the network card (although Windows says it's working properly).Cable
connections seem fine.
Can anyone please sugest where or at what I should look.

I take it this is a dialup connection? could be due to noise onthe
phone line, pickup the phone and press 1, if you hear any
crackling/popping sounds call your telco and tell them to fix it.
otherwise is someone else picking up the phone around the house, have
you disabled call waiting? are you connected to a lan also? unplug the
cable to the network card then try your internet for a while.

Flamer.

I'm on cable and diconnecting the modem works sometimes but not everytime.
This could be caused by: modem or the cable going into the modem from
the wall, the wall connector, the cable going from the wall connector
to the cable box outside, or a noisy signal.
I suggest that y'all call the cable provider and insist that they
trace the signal strength and noise level at y'alls home. There are
many folks with Cox in my neighborhood who had the problem with one or
more of the above causes, only threatening Cox with a disconnect
forced them to fix the problem(s).
Even now some of these folks have connection problems, but I would
guess to be less than 5% or what it was, which is liveable.

Maybe you should see if the connection is actually dropping or is it a
software related issue.

When the problem occurs, open up a cmd prompt (start/run type cmd and hit ok)

In the cmd prompt type in ping www.google.com and hit enter.

Do you get replies or request time out?

Please post back.
